The Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Tomorrow is the commemoration of the Beheding of John the Baptist. After celebrating his birth we now commemorate his birth into Heaven. I’m sure you all know the story (Mark 6:17). John calls out Herod for marrying his own brothers wife (while his brother was still alive). The “wife” Herodias’ daughter Salome danced for Herod on his birthday and afterward he promissed her whatever she wanted. Herodias told her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist which she did.

Lesser known is the ancient legend that some Winter after that, Salome was dancing on a frozen river. The ice broke, but as she fell through it closed up again cutting of her head. Ouch!
